Rebecca Zahau’s Boyfriend Warns He Might Sue Her Family’s Lawyer - ABC News (blog)

A lawyer for pharmaceutical mogul Jonah Shacknai has sent an email to the lawyer representing the family of his dead girlfriend, whose body was found at his historic mansion, threatening to sue if her family’s lawyer doesn’t stop insinuating that Shacknai influenced the probe into her death.

The body of Shacknai’s girlfriend Rebecca Zahau , 32, was found on the grounds of his Spreckels Mansion in Coronado, Calif., July 13. She died two days after Shacknai’s young son fell down the stairs of the mansion, suffering fatal head injuries.

A police investigation determined Zahau’s death was a suicide, but her family has hired lawyer Anne Bremner who has raised questions about the death and has pressed police to reopen the case.

ABCNews.com has obtained an email lawyer Dan K. Webb of the law firm Winston & Strawn LLP sent to Bremner Tuesday morning warning that “your false public statements constitute defamation, per se, and under law, entitle Mr. Shacknai to recover from you, and your law firm, substantial damages.” “What is most concerning are recent false public statements you have made that Mr. Shacknai, because of his business success, has somehow improperly influenced the investigations… You have further made public comments that these agencies have applied a different standard in conducting their investigations because of Mr. Shacknai’s wealth,” the letter said.

Coronado mansion death called suicide - USA Today

LOS ANGELES – A woman found dead, hanging naked with her hands bound behind her back at a historic Coronado, Calif., mansion in July, killed herself hours after learning that her boyfriend's 6-year-old son was near death from injuries sustained in a fall two days earlier, authorities said Friday.

The two mysterious deaths in one week at the historic $12 million Spreckels mansion in a tony beach resort near San Diego has captivated this normally reserved community and the nation as the bizarre details trickled out.

Zahau, 32, the girlfriend of Jonah Shacknai, CEO of the Arizona-based pharmaceutical company that produces cosmetic drugs such as Restylane, used kitchen knives to cut lengths of red nautical rope she found in the oceanfront mansion's garage and then bound her own hands and feet with it, said homicide Sgt. Dave Nemeth of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

She attached the rope to the footboard of a bed in the guest room, slipped a noose around her neck, went through the room's double doors onto the balcony and hurled herself over the scrollwork, wrought-iron railing, he said.

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) - Libyan rebels said they launched an attack on Tripoli in coordination with NATO late Saturday, and Associated Press reporters heard unusually heavy gunfire and explosions in the capital. The fighting erupted just hours after the opposition captured the key city of Zawiya nearby. Gunbattles and mortar rounds were heard clearly at the hotel where foreign correspondents stay in the capital. Explosions also sounded in the same area as NATO aircraft carried out heavy bombing runs after nightfall.

JERUSALEM (AP) - Israel's landmark 1979 peace treaty with Egypt is being tested by a cross-border attack blamed on Palestinian militants. Israel made a rare apology Saturday for the deaths of three Egyptian soldiers after Cairo threatened to withdraw its ambassador. The attack on Thursday set off a new cycle of Israeli-Palestinian violence. Israeli airstrikes have been answered by Palestinians pelting southern Israel with at least 80 rockets and mortars since Friday. An Israeli was killed Saturday in the desert city of Beersheba, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) from Gaza.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Two American men arrested more than two years ago while hiking along the Iraq-Iran border have been sentenced to eight years in prison on charges that include espionage, state TV reported Saturday, a sharp blow to hopes their release was imminent. The announcement seemed to send a hard-line message from Iran's judiciary - which answers directly to the ruling clerics - weeks after the country's foreign minister suggested that the trial of Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal could clear the way for their freedom.

RESOLUTE BAY, Nunavut (AP) - A chartered Boeing 737 plane crashed Saturday afternoon in Canada's Arctic region, killing 12 people, police said. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said the plane went down near the hamlet of Resolute Bay in the Arctic territory of Nunavut. The First Air charter flight was traveling from Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories to Resolute Bay, and was scheduled to continue on to Grise Fiord on Ellesmere Island.

Tennessee’s Self-Imposed Two Year Probation: Are We There Yet? - Rocky Top Talk

Updated July 23, 11:35 PM - Here's more from KNS and Andrew Gribble: some of the transcript from the NCAA's original and follow-up questioning of Bruce Pearl and his assistants surrounding the photo of Pearl with Aaron Craft. This too shows more of not only Pearl's dishonesty, but the stupidity in lying. They clearly knew about the photo before the questioning began. And I'll defer to Joel's lawyering skill on this, but UT's lawyer directly asked Pearl if the picture was taken "in your home any place", and Pearl still said no? They either thought it couldn't be proved, or Pearl really was that stupid on that fateful day. For what it's worth, the transcripts don't change any of my opinions about the nature of UT's self-imposed penalties, it just goes to further show that Pearl really made some poor choices.

A possible near-miss on Georgia Tech's athletic director aside, I keep telling myself that we're done digging our ditch around here. The men with the shovels have all moved on, either by termination, resignation, or a hasty retreat to the West Coast, and in all cases Tennessee fans do or will count it as a blessing. Feelings remain mixed on Bruce Pearl, but when the final punishment does arrive from on high at the NCAA, it still seems very likely that the length of the coming show-cause will reveal that we truly had no other option; Tony Jones' employment at Alcoa High School could suggest the same for him.

But even the worst possible punishment - postseason bans and scholarship reductions - would be for crimes we are no longer committing. We've stopped making it worse on ourselves no matter how much the NCAA punishes us for our sins over the last three years.

Tennessee's efforts with the NCAA have been to assign most if not all of the blame on Kiffin and Pearl. The self-imposed penalties only affect Cuonzo Martin in terms of off-campus meals, and only affected Derek Dooley in the loss of six days in the Spring 2011 recruiting period, plus having only 50% of the football staff contact recruits on the first day of the Fall 2011 recruiting period. They are, in my opinion, minor annoyances for two staffs that were not part of the problem and are trying to be part of the solution.

Man held in NYC boy’s slaying says he hears voices - ABC30.com

A lawyer for Levi Aron told a judge that his client told him that he has had hallucinations, while police say Leiby Kletzky fought for his life.

A lawyer for Levi Aron told a judge that his client told him that he has had hallucinations, while police say Leiby Kletzky fought for his life. "I think it is reasonable to say it was based on marks on the defendant that there was some struggle," NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

Leiby Kletzky vanished late Monday afternoon after getting lost during what was supposed to have been a seven-block walk from his day camp to a meeting spot with his mother.

Investigators later used a surveillance video to trace the missing boy to Levi Aron, a hardware supply store clerk the boy had apparently asked for directions.

Crash has Mourning in hot water - Charlotte Observer

MIAMI Former Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat star Alonzo Mourning was charged with leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, a second-degree misdemeanor, for his part in a traffic crash last week, the Florida Highway Patrol said Monday.

He also was cited for failure to leave his driving and contact information, FHP said. "Our investigation is complete," FHP spokesman Sgt. Thomas Pikul said.

The Mourning crash happened shortly after 3 a.m. July 17. Mourning, 41, was driving home to Coral Gables, Fla., with his wife, Tracy, from the wedding of Heat forward Chris Bosh at the Fontainebleau Hotel.

When Mourning's blue 2010 Porsche Panamera S slid into a 2010 Audi A4, one of two crashed cars in the middle of the highway, near the Interstate 95 intersection, according to FHP.

Stanley Reed, well-known Arkansas figure, killed in traffic crash; sought UA … - Daily Journal

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Stanley Reed, a cotton farmer and lawyer who briefly ran for the U.S. Senate and was among the finalists to lead the University of Arkansas system, died Friday in a single-vehicle crash. He was 59.

Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler says troopers were notified a little before 10 a.m. Friday of a car that crashed in Woodruff County. Sadler says Reed was dead at the scene.

State police said Reed's vehicle left the roadway without any evidence of attempting to brake or skid, crossed a ditch, traveled more than 300 feet and struck a tree.

Reed learned Thursday that after being one of four finalists, he'd missed out on being named to lead the University of Arkansas system. The UA trustees chose Donald Bobbitt, the current provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Texas at Arlington, as the next president.

Father’s Day are complicated for some families: 3 stories of father-child reunions - The Canadian Press

NEW YORK, N.Y. — Estrangement can make Father's Day complicated for many families, but reunion can be oh so sweet. Here are three stories — and many lives — touched by fathers lost and found.

That's the year she decided to contact her birthmother, who told her that contrary to her adoption file, her birthfather was very much alive.

Marni grew up in suburban Minneapolis and lives in Red Wing, Minn. She was adopted at birth, the little sister of three much-older brothers born to her adoptive parents. She'd had legal access to her adoption file since turning 18, but had no interest in looking at it until after becoming a mother herself, when she felt the need to check on potential health issues for her children.

She didn't find any health worries. Instead, she stumbled on a trail of lies. The file included a letter written by her birthmother in 1969 that said both her birthparents were medical students who'd planned to marry, but her birthfather died in a motorcycle accident, "and it was too hard for her to keep me so she put me up for adoption," Marni said.
